Barred Irregular Galaxy in Sculptor (NGC 55)

By BRUNO ROTA SARGI

NGC 55 is a barred irregular galaxy located in the constellation Sculptor, about 6.5 million light-years from Earth. Seen almost edge-on, it reveals extensive dust lanes and active star-forming regions. It resembles the Large Magellanic Cloud in appearance, though it is slightly smaller. Together with NGC 300, it forms a nearby galaxy pair on the edge of the Sculptor Group. It was discovered in 1826 by the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop.
