WR 134
By Salvo Cucinotta e Giuseppe Guerrera
WR 134 is a Wolf-Rayet star located about 6,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. Wolf-Rayet stars are among the most extreme stars in the universe: enormous, extremely hot (up to 60,000°C), and characterized by powerful stellar winds. These winds sweep away the star's outer layers, releasing gas and elements into space that expand to form spectacular cosmic bubbles. In the case of WR 134, the result is a large blue oxygen nebula, visible as a shell surrounding the brighter white star at its center.
