Deep into the Soul - IC1871 & LBN673

By Jordi Jofre

This frame centers on LBN 673, a bright emission patch inside the Soul Nebula which sits between Cassiopeia and the Perseus constellations. The nebula lies about ~6,500 light-years away and stretches over 100 light-years across. Ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from massive O/B stars in the IC 1848 cluster sculpt the dramatic pillars, ridges, and shock fronts seen here. These structures shine strongly in H-alpha and [S II], while [O III] outlines cavities carved by energetic feedback. The image has been captured from Àger, Catalonia, under a B3 sky.
