Thunderbolts in Cygnus – SNR G65.3+5.7
By Jordi Jofre
This image explores the southern edge of SNR G65.3+5.7, a sprawling supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus, located about 3,000 light-years away. A 2010 study suggests this remnant is currently in its radiative phase, meaning the shock front has slowed enough for the hot, shocked gas to cool efficiently and radiate along its edges — creating the striking filaments we see. With shock speeds around ~100 km/s, the remnant’s age is estimated to be 20–30 thousand years, and no compact remnant has been confirmed yet, leaving its supernova type (Ia or core-collapse) still an open question. The image is a 2-panel mosaic with a total integration time of 102 hours from Àger, Catalonia.
