NGC 7094 & Rarely Imaged ‘Shenron Nebula’ [Oiii] Arc

By Stefan Pommerin

Sweeping above the planetary nebula NGC 7094 in Pegasus is a broad, ghostly arc of [OIII] - A rare and enigmatic structure nicknamed the 'Shenron Nebula'. First noticed in a wide-field discovery image by Yann Sainty and Marcel Drechsler , the arc’s origin remains unknown. The [OIII] feature doesn’t match the usual halo of a planetary nebula, nor does it fit neatly into the shell of a known supernova remnant. Whatever its story, to my knowledge, only one image had captured it before - the discovery itself. This image combines broadband LRGB with narrowband H-Alpha and OIII filters, capturing not only NGC 7094 and the [Oiii] arc, but also the surrounding integrated flux nebula (IFN) - vast clouds of interstellar dust floating high above the Milky Way’s plane, illuminated only by the faint, combined glow of billions of distant stars. I also always enjoy finding many distant background galaxies peeking through cosmic dust.
